So, I’ve decided to go back to work on Otherworlders. I’m going to give it at least a polish, maybe a whole third draft. I’m also considering starting a kickstarter to fund getting a professional edit done on it.

To get ready for that, and because hey, it’s fun, I made a trailer for my novel. I used photos of people that I’ve taken, combined with some stock photos of backgrounds, and compiled them. I also used some stock loops and composed the music. I then wrote and recorded the script. So if you ever wonder what my voice sounds like, here it is! Enjoy!!

Flash Fiction Friday – Brimstone Canyon

Chris always said that he’d be buried in Brimstone Canyon. Truth be told, I always thought it would have been a lot sooner.

I parked my car several hundred feet from the site and began to walk. The path to the burial plot was long, winding, and made of dirt that cut through the tall grass. Rolling hills flanked either side of the unspoiled terrain. The canyon was named for the mining that was once done here. They pulled a lot of metal and minerals out of the earth, and they had a tendency to react with flames if dropped together. Most of the time, the utmost caution was used. But deadlines and quotas sometimes called for corners to be cut.   Continue reading →

This weeks challenge was a mash-up of genre’s.  I pulled Time Travel and Kaiju.  Enjoy.

Standing in the lab, Brady’s breathing became rapid as he stared at the device before him. It wasn’t what he expected. Instead, it was hardly large enough to fit a man his size, and colored a listless silver. His muscular chest rose and fell, and his solid frame rattled. Wearing a white coat, the scientist placed a consoling hand on his back. Swallowing hard, he took pensive steps forward, and stepped into the machine.

“Is this going to hurt?” he asked.

“I’m not really sure. I would assume so,” Dr. Stone answered as he checked the readouts.  Continue reading →

Jeremiah sat behind the desk in his auto shop. The smell of old oil seeped through the walls, staining his office with the oder. He had nearly gotten used to it. Looking through reports, he rested his head on his hands, feeling the stress.

“Jer!” a man said. Jeremiah didn’t have to look up to know who it was.

“Hey, Rea,” he said flatly, raising his head. “Still fashionable as ever, I see,” he said, pointing out that Rea wore all black, as always.

“What can I say? I’m traditional. And it’s sliming.”

Jeremiah leaned back in his chair and groaned.

“Like you need it,” he said. Rea had always been skin and bones while life had made Jeremiah get doughy.

“I’m putting together a crew,” he said, straight to the point.   Continue reading →

Flash Fiction – New Skills

09 Friday Aug 2013

Here is another flash fiction.  This one is a bit longer than most.  I’ve been actively learning and trying to sharpen my skills.  Putting it into practice, I think that I’ve built a better scene, and I couldn’t do it justice if I tried to do it in fewer words.  Anyways, Enjoy!

Prompt:

Main Character – A monk who has taken a vow of silence (he doesn’t communicate by sign language / writing / texting / or any other gimmick, either)
Sidekick – A teen girl math genius
Theme – the young can learn from the old, and the old can learn from the young.
The Story – They have to team up and solve a missing-person mystery!

After a fierce debate with the guards, which she had exquisitely won through her special combination of intelligent rationalization and persistent annoyance, Ling had been granted access to the temple.  She passed through the towering, solid-wooden doors into the buildings main space.  She felt even smaller than she normally did, dwarfed by the imposingly high ceilings and larger than life sculptures.   Continue reading →

Cole rocked back and forth in his chair on the porch, as he did many evenings since he retired.  His hair, that had once echoed his name, had turned silver, and the hands that crafted the seat had grown wrinkled and shaken.  Never again could he use them to create such fine work.

His home sat on acres, where he could sit undisturbed as long as he liked.  Accompanying him on the porch was a table.  Atop it sat the small fuel lamp that softly illuminated the area, a pad of paper and pen, and a chess board.   Continue reading →
