Last Week’s SS: Dealt – The Search

zombiesapien

Victoria told this story to me a thousand times. She said that it was important that I knew where I came from and the severity of the situation. But I think it was of equal importance to her that I never feel as though I was easily abandoned. My best guess is that she presented them a hefty bag of coin and they handed me over without a second thought. Nor do I think they told her of my destiny. Not until she demanded the card. But Victoria tells the story a bit different.   Continue reading →

Last Week’s FFF:  Ages

zombiesapien

Jennifer sat quiet in the front pew, eyes forward, emotion hidden from her expression. Her feet barely brushed the ground as they dangled from her seat. In front of her, at the alter, old people gathered, said words, some cried, some laughed. Jennifer heard none of it. The words were numb in her ears. Her eyes were fixed on the body.   Continue reading →

Normally when I sit down to write, my fingers move at full speed.  Most occasions when I sit down to write, I can fire off 1-2000 words in an hour.   That includes taking time to refill my coffee, bathroom breaks, taking a quick break on the internet… Continue reading →

Last Week’s WW: 10 Things to Know About Writing Scenes

“Hello,” he called.
“Oh, hi Jim,” she replied.
“How are you doing today?” He questioned.
“Just fine. And yourself?” She returned.
“Fine as well,” he provided.
“Glad to hear it. What brings you by?” She asked.
“I needed to get more information about that body you found,” he pressed.

There’s a few things wrong with that conversation.

My parent may have been on the run, but they still needed to work. With all of their money spent on the hospital trip, they were back to peddling. They set up shop at the opposite end of town, and wore disguises to reduce the risk that anyone who knew them would see. If anyone were to locate my parents, it would take a great deal of motivation and money. Victoria had both.

Age 1

Dr. Jack Kingsley watched the toddler through the viewing window. The next room was decorated in bright colors, with a slew of stuffed animals and train decals. The child gripped the edge of of his swing, pulled himself standing, and tentatively let go. A moment later, on shaky legs, he took a step. Then two more before falling onto his bottom.

Jack put a digital recorder to his lips and pressed record.

“Subject E is progressing as expected. Despite the accelerated rate of growth, subject is meeting all expected milestones for projected age. Currently, subject E’s age is approximately one year old. This is seven weeks after birth.

Last Week’s WW:  The Life and Death of a Character

Stories are big.  So big, in fact, that we cannot possibly show every piece of them.  But then, who would want to?  Is it really necessary to show Sir Wexbuttom cleaning the dishes after that disastrous dinner party?  No.  We want to see the dinner party.

Here’s 10 things to know about Scenes:

1) Something interesting or, even more importantly, intrinsic should be going on.   Continue reading →

Last Week’s Dealt:  Victoria
Read it from the beginning:  Welcome to the world

After tense minutes of silence waiting for the High Priestess to arrive, she finally entered. She was being led by security, however, they dare not touch her. No one had ever heard of a priestess inflicting any sort of damage on any living creature. However, this did not diminish the fear that people felt in her presence.

“Priestess, did you deal this card?” the Emperor asked, maddened.

With a slight, soft bow of her head, she motioned her reply that she had.  Continue reading →

Last Week’s FFF – Faithful

zombiesapien

It was hot and muggy inside the desalinization plant. The building was drenched in sunshine, but enclosed, allowing no wind. It was so continuously bright that it forced the laborers to wear dimming goggles.

Craig worked the machine, his strong arms pumping, helping extra fresh water from the salty soup. His mouth was dry, and his brow was wet. He stayed an arm and raised it to wipe his forehead. Continue reading →

new desk

For a while now my sanctuary in which to write has been:  Panera, Corner Bakery, the bus, and my lap.  For the few years before that, the closest thing I had to a desk was a folding table.

Now that I’m in the new apartment, the folding table has been downgraded to patio furniture.  And now, I have desk of my very own!  Continue reading →
