Welcome to my blog!  If you’ve com here for the Zombie Crawl, then you’ve likely been at it for days.  If you’re one of my regulars, then, hey look!  It’s a Zombie Crawl!  😀

Here’s the giveaway:  A free audible copy of my book 22 Short Scifi Stories (there’s plenty of dystopia in there).  Just comment and I’ll pick 3 people to give codes to.

For my post, I decided to put up one of my favorite flash fictions that I’ve written. (also, here’s a picture of me as a zombie that I made in Photoshop).

I thought things would get easier. Truth is, I guess, they never do. Life, death, or whatever you call this, it’s all the same. I should know. I remember everything from my former life. Some say I’m lucky, or, would if they could talk. Continue reading →

Last Week’s WW: Invincibility Kills

When I first started writing, and for some time after that, I found that I had trouble developing a style that I liked.  What’s worse, is that I had problems describing what specifically I didn’t like about it. Continue reading →

Last Week’s MM: IFLScience

Ramez Naam has created an interesting series.  Set in the very near future, Kade, a young scientist discovers a way to alter an illegal nano-drug called Nexus.  He uses it to link people mind to mind.  Beyond that, he can use it as an operating system and use it as software.  But he gets blackmailed into helping the government.  In the second book, Crux, the world is a very different place and Kade is a highly wanted man.

This series is filled with danger, tension, questions of who can be trusted, what is crossing the line, and even, what it is to be human and the full potential of all that that entails.

There are many interesting parts to the books.  I love the realism and potential of the technology.  He’s created some unique adaptations.  But it doesn’t stop there.  Beyond the nano-drug, he also explores gene splicing and human enhancements.  Another interesting thing about this book is that a large portion of it takes place in countries other than America.  There’s China, Vietnam, and Thailand, just to name a few.  It’s a growing angle that I’ve seen in books, and I welcome it.

I really enjoyed both of these stories.  I think there is going to be a third book, and I can’t wait for it.  Nexus won the 2014 Prometheus Award, and Crux has had also been well received.

Last Week’s WW:  Plantser

Recently, there was a trailer released for the upcoming Avengers: Age of Ultron Movie.  While I don’t have any insight into the movie, I do have a few thoughts on writing characters that this trailer reminded me about.

If you’re unfamiliar with the plot: possible spoilers?   But I doubt it.

Last Week’s MM:  Podcasts and Live Shows

I’m certain that at one point or another while scrolling through your facebook feed, you’ve seen someone share or like something from IFLScience.   They have grown to have over 18 million likes.

I mention them today because I think that they are a good resource.  Plus, they are entertaining if you’re a nerd like me.

They’re articles catch my attention several times a day.  I feel like they help keep me up to date on cutting edge science that I may not have even known to go looking for otherwise.

Beyond that, good science fiction is rooted in good science.  Being knowledgeable about a subject that you’re writing about is simply responsible.   I often find articles through them that enlighten and teach me.  Some of their articles even spark whole concepts for stories, or can be stored in my brain to add details to enrich worlds.

They also have a not facebook website.   I suggest checking it out.  And if you haven’t subscribed to their facebook page, you’re missing out.

planster

With NaNoWriMo only a couple weeks away, there is a question that keeps popping up:  “Are you a planner, or a pantser?”

Planners

Planners like to outline.  More than like.  They need to outline.  The idea of writing without a game plan is like being dropped into the middle of the ocean with only a pair of water wings.  Sure, you can swim.  But you don’t know where to go.  You might find your way to shore.  Or, you might end up farther out to sea.   Continue reading →

advice, blank page, block, finished, finished project, getting through it, how to, how to write, motivation, serial, series, write, writer, writer's block

Yay!  I finished Book 2 of my current project.

I’m especially relieved because I had been facing bad block.  Well, I hesitant to call it writer’s block.  I knew a lot of what I wanted to write, and had a rough outline.  But I was intimidated by the project.  It was so far out of my comfort zone.  It was mostly a story of internal conflict.  The guy goes crazy, so I was using an unreliable narrator.  Plus, this story has themes.  I know, all stories have themes, or they’re not really stories.  But I normally don’t come at a story with themes in mind.  I usually write the story, find the themes in it, and fluff them up more later.

I had a lot of challenges with this book.  Like I said, way out of the comfort zone.

(my guy also points out that by turning, what theoretically could be 1 novel into 5 different stories, it’s extra difficult, because there has to be 5 different, complete stories, as well as an overall arch).

But I did it.  It’s done!  Since I was so scared of this project, I found that it helped to get outside accountability.  I started posting my word meter to my facebook page.  It really inspired me.  It tore down my walls and let the words run free once more.  I wrote about 10,000 words in 3 days.

So don’t be afraid of any project.  If you’re not pushing yourself, you’re not growing and improving.  Do whatever you have to do to motivate yourself.   It’s worth it!!
