Last Week’s FFF: asd

title

They began to gather days ago. Jut a few at first. I suppose that they were the most hungry. But in time, their numbers swelled. There were hundreds now, maybe thousands. And we couldn’t keep them out forever.

I watched from my vantage point as the horde became increasingly rowdy. They pushed, shoved, howled, and were becoming more agitated by the moment.

I envisioned the violence. These were supposed to be humans. People who were once neighbors now vying to get int, willing to do whatever was necessary.   Continue reading →

Writing Wednesday – Scrivener (1/2 price black Friday)

Last Week’s WW:  The Only Way Through is to Do

When writing, there are a lot of options for what program you do it with.  Starting out, many people use Word.  I know that I did.  But then, my fella started using a program called Scrivener.  At first, it was a bit complex, and I didn’t fully understand it.  But, I played around with it.  The copy he had came with a household license, so I was able to put it on my computer.

Once I started using it, I realized how helpful it really was.  One of the best features is that it lets you make each chapter a folder.  This is really valuable with copy and pasting.  Sometimes, scenes have to get moved around.  Sometimes you need to find something quick but only have a vague idea of where it was.  I’ve had to piece together and reorganize things quite a bit.  Also, outside of the manuscript, I like to create a folder where I can put my “cut” words.  That way, if I’ve written something I don’t like, but find a place where it works later, I still have it saved.

  • Scivener can do so much that there are entire classes dedicated to sections of it.  I can’t describe all of its functions.  But here are a few: You can set word goals for your day, your project (and if you’re on a mac, it’ll analyze it based on the days you plan to write and tell you how much you need to do to get to your goal)
  • Its got a customization full screen mode so you can block out the rest of the cyber world while you work.
  • Its got spell check
  • You can import research and full webpages into it, so that way your notes are there and you don’t have to brave the distraction climate of the internet to look something up.  You can look at it unplugged.
  • When you go to publish, there are so many file options.
    • you can do: .rft .doc .docx …
    • but what’s really cool, is you can export it as ebooks
      • including fully customization Kindle books.  you can make a clickable table of contents, you can format it however you like, include whatever pages/data you want, something that some people pay others hundreds of dollars to do for them.

There can be a bit of a learning curve to the program.  And I’ve yet to tap all of its features.  But there are free online tutorials to help you with whatever you’re unsure about.

I think it’s a great program.  And, when I saw that it was going to be 1/2 off on Black Friday, I wanted to let you all know.  I don’t know much about the link that I’ve pasted.  I saw author friends sharing it on Facebook, and they usually know what they’re talking about.  So, if you don’t have a copy, I’d say it’s worth looking into.

Have a great Thanksgiving, a safe Black Friday, and Happy Writing!

Mention Monday – The Future Chronicles

Last Week’s MM: Write On

I’ve been seeing an increase in anthologies lately.  They, and short stories, are making an impact on the writing scene.

Anthologies are great things.  They allow authors to explore certain topics or genres.  They can pair newer, but worthy, writers with established ones, and introduce readers to authors that they may not have otherwise found.

One great example of this is The Future Chronicles.

The first of these, The Robot Chronicles, explores how robots might be in the future.  It has stories from Hugh Howey and Matthew Mather, two of my favorites, as well as a great many other authors who I hadn’t had an opportunity to read before.  It was a quick read.  The stories are each short, but intriguing and impossible to put down.

The second installment is the recently released The Telepath Chronicles.   This book has another fantastic offering of authors.  It explores the possibility of mind-to-mind communication.   As of writing this, I’ve only started reading this one, but I’m certain that I won’t be disappointed.

These books are arranged by Samuel Peralta, a talented author.  The future of The Future Chronicles isn’t to stop at 2.  They will keep going.  And I can’t wait to see what the future holds!

Last Week’s FFF: Tender

Sound System Regular

In the Interworlds, I was a god. Better than that. I was a superhero. Not many players made it to my level. In fact, in the entire history of the Interworlds, almost ten years, there had been less than twenty.

Due to my super-player status, I was part of a league. The Heroes League. Not the most imaginative name. But trying to convince seventeen people who all thought that they were the best the Interworlds had ever seen to pick one name was impossible. Every single one of us wanted a say in naming it. Eventually, the Admins just had to go with something. Heroes League it was. Continue reading →

Last Week’s WW: Good Science Leads to Good Fiction

While working on my current project, I’ve run into some tough writing times.

Usually, I can sit down and crank out two thousand words in an hour.  Then I  finish my second or third cup of coffee while using my free hand to pat myself on the back, and I’m done for the day.

But for some reason, working on my Slumber Series, I’ve been overwhelmed.  I would sit down, write two sentences, and think, ugh this is so hard.  I’m never going to get anything done. And promptly switch to playing Hearthstone or watching people on Buzzfeed try foods from other countries.   Continue reading →

Slumber Saga: Book 3 is done!

Well, first draft done, anyway.   Came in at just over 15,000 words.

I’ve been feeling really blocked lately.  Especially when it comes to this series.  It’s a really hard book (series) to write.  It’s so deep, and theme oriented, and a little dark and dramatic.  I’ve come to love the world building aspect of writing, so having something that is a series of inward journeys has been a real challenge.  Glad that I’m making progress!

Last MM: Intersteller

There is a beta program from Kindle called Write On by Kindle.   It’s a place to post works-in-progress, get feedback, ask questions, possibly build a fan base, and network with other writers.  It has message boards similar to the K-Boards.  I found it helpful when I was writing my pitch for Otherworlders.   I posted what I had in my pitch and what my concerns where, and a few authors helped me tighten it up.  I’ve also posted a couple chapters from some WIP of my own and am getting feedback as I’m creating.

I would like it to be bigger and for there to be more involvement.   But it’s in Beta, so maybe it will be once it launches fully.

Since it’s in Beta, to join, you have to request it.

Anyway, it’s just another resource.  Feedback is one of the most valuable things a writer can have.  And to get it from other writers is even better.

Jeremy walked into through the crowded bar.  The noise of a hundred conversations was nearly deafening.  Even worse, he wasn’t a part of any of them.  Arms tucked into his hoodie, he squeezed through the mass of happy, half drunk people and made his way to the bar.    Continue reading →

Last Week’s WW: Line Edits (nominate my book, please!)

It is my belief that good science fiction must be based in good science.  It’s easy to come up with some crazy, or innovative concept, only to find it fall apart when someone knowledgeable comes along and pokes holes in it.   Continue reading →
