Last Week’s FFF: Wasteland
(
This story was set up by author Paul J Willett’s story Beach Road)

My Scars

As she lay in the grass above the abandoned bridge, she followed the distant helicopter with her binoculars. She knew that she had two options. She could either sprint down to the bridge and scream out to it, or let it pass and hope she went unnoticed. The bridge had a gap in the center that was free of cars, and big enough to fit a helicopter. There weren’t any suspension cables or things to impede it’s landing or take off. And with limited access on two sides, and water on the other two, it would be the ideal spot to get picked up.

Just a few months ago, her course of action would have been clear. She would have laid as still as possible and pray that they didn’t see her. Continue reading →

Last Week’s FFF: Eco

Weekend Warrior

They didn’t count on me surviving. Of course, if those fools could do anything right then I wouldn’t be walking through a desert right now. The once green ground is now completely scorched, and I haven’t seen the remains of a building for miles. The only upside is the clouds. Those fallout clouds block out what would otherwise be an intense noon sun.

Someone might ask me, were there any survivors left to ask, why I was headed into the epicenter of the fallout. Continue reading →

Last week’s FFF: Courthouse Edition

Lost in Future Regular

As the ship orbited just outside above the Sterilis’s atmosphere, Jenkins couldn’t help but stare at the beauty of it. Below him there were vast expanses of blue seas and dusty white beaches. Scattered clouds hung in the sky, but they were just wisps and barely obstructed his view.

He couldn’t wait to go down there. Continue reading →

Last Week’s FFF: Celestials

Daren looked around at the wasteland that used to be his neighborhood. Destruction had consumed the cul-de-sac. The smoldering remains of homes still billowed smoke into the sky. He turned to look at the plot of land where his two-story home sat just yesterday. Now it was an unrecognizable pile of debris.

He walked over to the rubble. He could feel the warmth from the burnt out brick and wood under his feet. He kicked about the shattered pieces of his life, looking for any evidence that he had once lived here. That he had lived at all.   Continue reading →

It was hot and muggy inside the desalinization plant. The building was drenched in sunshine, but enclosed, allowing no wind. It was so continuously bright that it forced the laborers to wear dimming goggles.

Craig worked the machine, his strong arms pumping, helping extra fresh water from the salty soup. His mouth was dry, and his brow was wet. He stayed an arm and raised it to wipe his forehead. Continue reading →

Last weeks FFF – Island After
*****

The sun had hardly crested behind the barn, but Jacob had already been at his chores for hours. The pigs were fed, chicken eggs collected, and now he turned his attention to the horses. Brushing the creatures was Jacob’s favorite part of the day. There was something soothing in those strokes.

Before he could begin the grooming, the stalls needed cleaning. He shoveled the hay, pitchfork after pitchfork, removing the soiled bedding and making way for new.

Beyond the dry noise of the thrush, he heard a rustling.   Continue reading →

Head spinning and coated in sand, Nathan struggled to open his eyes. They were heavy from more than just the grain atop them. He convinced one eye to draw back its gate. Though fuzzy at first, his vision cleared. His other eye shot open upon seeing the expansive beach that he had washed up on.   Continue reading →

Before being pushed against his locker, Ben could feel the imposing cloud and braced himself.

“Watch where I’m going, geek!” the hulk in the letter jacket yelled as he and his friends continued on.

Pressing his palms on the metal, Ben peeled himself off the cold surface. He ran his hands through his short hair and straightened his hoodie. The bullying had been a daily occurrence since he had transferred two weeks ago. Ben knew he was smarter than most, and true, he wasn’t athletic, but at his last school, that didn’t matter. He had never experienced the classic jock-nerd rivalry before moving here.    Continue reading →

“I have this fantasy,” Gary said aloud as he lay in his safe place.

“Go on,” the therapist probed.

“I see myself finding the loner who stole my money, hunting him down, and killing him. But I don’t want to kill him quickly; I want to take my time. Really make him pay for it.”

“Do you think that’s a fair consequence? A slow and painful death in exchange for missing some money?”

“That’s what he’s done to me. He didn’t just steal money. He stole everything. He took my life’s savings, my credit, my home, even my good name. I have nothing now. I have no way to get it back. I may as well be dead. So, it’s really just an eye for an eye.”   Continue reading →
