The first draft of book 2 of my serial fiction project is complete.  Yay!  It clocks in at 20, 434 words.  Just over my goal.  I’m sure it will grow even bigger with the second draft.  So, that’s 2 books down, 2 to go.  Hooray!  Skyland has been edited, and is ready for round two.  I’m sending Windchasers to my Alpha reader for feedback.  But I’m going to wait to do a global draft 2 until all four parts are done.  For now, it’s time to start Submerbia.  (I need to think up names for the actual book and series.  Any suggestions are appreciated.)

For today, however, in excitement for finally being finished with it, I’m posting an exert from the first chapter.  Let me know what you think!  Sorry there is no separate FFF, I had a quick day, consisting of waking up way too late, taking a shower, riding the bus to work, working, and coming home.  And now it’s almost 1am.  But I hope you enjoy the exert and any feedback is appreciated. Keep in mind, it’s still first draft status.  🙂

WINDCHASERS

The wind drove me forward, as it did all things.  My people, the livestock, and the dust.  Torrential force slapped at my backside as I made my way along.  Hood over head, the thick sheep-hide cloak shielded my weather-thickened skin from the brunt of it.  Still, as it pressed upon me, it was a constant reminder of the urgency of our migration.  Continue reading →

Last Week’s FFF: Sight

storyt title

Two crash test dummies in a forbidden romance:

Jane had little understanding of what her new job entailed, and, therefore, was naively excited for her first day of work.  She sat in the passenger seat of the new sedan.  She studied the interior.  The seats were made of soft leather.  It was slick against her pants.  The air conditioner was on in the car and so was the seat warmer.

Balance she thought.

The dash board was clean.  The radio donned a seven inch touch screen interface.  It was currently off.  There was a shifter in the middle, but she knew that the car was automatic.  Her hand was positioned on the arm support of the door.  It felt fresh, like it had never been touched before.

John sat next to her.  Continue reading →

Last Week’s FFF:  Indecisive

zombiesapien

The veil of darkness was lifted from Steel’s vision, as the hood was removed. He breathed in the fresh oxygen. He had been sucking on his own recycled breath for over an hour. He stretched his neck and studied his new surroundings. There were two other men standing beside him. Their hair was tussled. Hood hair. Continue reading →

Last Week’s FFF: Dinozombie

Samuel loaded Cassidy’s bags above their seats. The trains storage area consisted of a flat surface and a rail. There was nothing to hold the bags in place other than their weight. Cassidy’s bag was more than heavy enough to ensure it wouldn’t slide around.

“Are you ready for this?” Samuel asked.

She folded the excessive fabric of her dresses skirt in front of her and wedged herself into her seat.

“I can’t stay here any longer. Too many memories,” she said.

Samuel brushed his long, leather jacket to the side and began to sit next to her. A hand stayed him. He turned to see a member of the train staff.

“Sorry sir, you’ll have to stow those,” the man said, pointing to the twin guns on his hips.   Continue reading →

Last Week’s FFF: Celestials

zombiesapien

Daren looked around at the wasteland that used to be his neighborhood. Destruction had consumed the cul-de-sac. The smoldering remains of homes still billowed smoke into the sky. He turned to look at the plot of land where his two-story home sat just yesterday. Now it was an unrecognizable pile of debris.

He walked over to the rubble. He could feel the warmth from the burnt out brick and wood under his feet. He kicked about the shattered pieces of his life, looking for any evidence that he had once lived here. That he had lived at all.   Continue reading →

Last Week’s FFF:  Ages

zombiesapien

Jennifer sat quiet in the front pew, eyes forward, emotion hidden from her expression. Her feet barely brushed the ground as they dangled from her seat. In front of her, at the alter, old people gathered, said words, some cried, some laughed. Jennifer heard none of it. The words were numb in her ears. Her eyes were fixed on the body.   Continue reading →

Last Week’s FFF: Hydropunk

zombiesapien

Age 1

Dr. Jack Kingsley watched the toddler through the viewing window. The next room was decorated in bright colors, with a slew of stuffed animals and train decals. The child gripped the edge of of his swing, pulled himself standing, and tentatively let go. A moment later, on shaky legs, he took a step. Then two more before falling onto his bottom.

Jack put a digital recorder to his lips and pressed record.

“Subject E is progressing as expected. Despite the accelerated rate of growth, subject is meeting all expected milestones for projected age. Currently, subject E’s age is approximately one year old. This is seven weeks after birth.

Last Week’s FFF – Faithful

zombiesapien

It was hot and muggy inside the desalinization plant. The building was drenched in sunshine, but enclosed, allowing no wind. It was so continuously bright that it forced the laborers to wear dimming goggles.

Craig worked the machine, his strong arms pumping, helping extra fresh water from the salty soup. His mouth was dry, and his brow was wet. He stayed an arm and raised it to wipe his forehead. Continue reading →

Last Weeks FFF – Time Cowboy

zombiesapien

What time is it? Hmm, still light out. Must be day time. It’s been forever since Master was home. I miss him. I miss him so much. I guess I’ll take a nap until he comes home.

Jack spun in a circle three times and settled in on the floor. He let out a chuff and closed his eyes. He dreamed of rabbits in the backyard. They ran fast, faster then he could. Darting left and right, always just out of reach. Then Master was there. He had dark hair, and a face full of expressions. He was so happy to see Jack, just as he always was. He crouched down on the ground and called Jack over. Jack ran to him, tail whipping back and fourth. He snuggled up close, nuzzling his owner’s neck, then kissing him with his tongue all over the place. Jack couldn’t smell Master. He never could smell anything in dreams. It was how he eventually knew that they weren’t real. Then, it started to rain.
