Last weeks FFF – Island After
*****

The sun had hardly crested behind the barn, but Jacob had already been at his chores for hours. The pigs were fed, chicken eggs collected, and now he turned his attention to the horses. Brushing the creatures was Jacob’s favorite part of the day. There was something soothing in those strokes.

Before he could begin the grooming, the stalls needed cleaning. He shoveled the hay, pitchfork after pitchfork, removing the soiled bedding and making way for new.

Beyond the dry noise of the thrush, he heard a rustling.   Continue reading →

Before being pushed against his locker, Ben could feel the imposing cloud and braced himself.

“Watch where I’m going, geek!” the hulk in the letter jacket yelled as he and his friends continued on.

Pressing his palms on the metal, Ben peeled himself off the cold surface. He ran his hands through his short hair and straightened his hoodie. The bullying had been a daily occurrence since he had transferred two weeks ago. Ben knew he was smarter than most, and true, he wasn’t athletic, but at his last school, that didn’t matter. He had never experienced the classic jock-nerd rivalry before moving here.    Continue reading →

Elora protested against the goon pushing her along.

“We caught her trying to sneak in, boss,” said the lackey as he held her with his only arm.

“I wasn’t trying to sneak in,” she said, pulling away from him.

“Aren’t you a feisty one?” the boss asked, smiling his crooked yellow grin.

She had heard about him, but was surprised by the sight. In her experience, zombies where decaying flesh piles. He still looked half human. If not for the ash gray color of his skin and sunken features he could have passed for living. The rumors must be true. He knew how to keep the rot away.    Continue reading →

Journal Entry 27

There it is again. That feeling that I’ve done this before. That I’ve experienced this action, this moment, more times then I can count. Sure, everyone has this thought now and again. But the sensation is coming more frequently then before. Two, maybe even three times a day. It’s like I’m not just experiencing something I have before, I’m living a life that I’ve lived before. And it always ends the same.

Flash Fiction Friday - Treasure

Hola From Puerto Vallarta!

Today’s Flash fiction is brought to you from Mexico! I’m on vacation. Enjoy!!

“Where did you get this?” Lola asked.
I knew by her tone that she was begging for me to lie. But my days of coddling her feelings were long past.
“Where do you think?” I asked, bluntly.
“You stole it,” she said, disappointed. “When you called, I had hoped that you were done. That you were ready to come back to me, to the force, to the life you lost when you gave into corruption.”   Continue reading →

“You’d better have a good reason for dragging me out of bed at 3 AM,” Jack barked indifferently to the situation room full of his coworkers, bosses, and subordinates.

“Glad you could join us, Agent Reiss.” If Jack had a direct boss, it would have been this man. Jack had a certain set of skills which allowed him to answer to no man, although, he did take suggestions more than orders whenever the situation called for it. “If you had bothered to show up for the briefing, you would know that we’ve had an abduction.”   Continue reading →

“I have this fantasy,” Gary said aloud as he lay in his safe place.

“Go on,” the therapist probed.

“I see myself finding the loner who stole my money, hunting him down, and killing him. But I don’t want to kill him quickly; I want to take my time. Really make him pay for it.”

“Do you think that’s a fair consequence? A slow and painful death in exchange for missing some money?”

“That’s what he’s done to me. He didn’t just steal money. He stole everything. He took my life’s savings, my credit, my home, even my good name. I have nothing now. I have no way to get it back. I may as well be dead. So, it’s really just an eye for an eye.”   Continue reading →

Serg drew long a long breath through his pipe. As he inhaled, he felt a sensation of peace rush down his throat. He held it there momentarily, savoring its flavor. With despair, he released the smoke slowly into the air.
He slumped in his chair and laid his pipe on the table beside him. The den was dark and lit sparsely with only a few candles. He preferred it this way. The simulated solitude allowed him to disappear into himself.
He looked at the severed hand on the table, then closed his eyes and traced his finger over the long, raised scar that marred the left side of his face. Continue reading →

In the office overlooking the rest of the floor, the VP worked. Sixty hour work weeks and stress made her body slim, and her designer suits hung off her frame like silk. At thirty-two, she was the youngest VP in the history of the company. But her ambition didn’t end there.

“Moira,” she called to her secretary.

No answer.

“Moira!” she said again.

But still, no reply.

“On a call?” she wondered to herself out loud. Annoyed at the insolence of her assistant, she stormed from her office, to just beyond the door, where her secretary sat. She was looking down below.   Continue reading →

It’s still Friday in some part of the world, right?  No?  Oh well.  Enjoy!

***

Zach, sipping his coffee and shuffling along down the corridor, squinted against the rising artificial sun. The transition from night to morning was merely a courtesy on the ship. Zach assumed it was to keep all aboard from having psychotic breaks. Though he had never seen a real sunrise with his own eyes, he could remember it well, and knew that it occurred less abruptly. He could vaguely recall the gradual swatches of pinks and purples that colored the early mornings, ending with glorious oranges and blues.   Continue reading →
