Last Week’s WW:  Pushing Through

Okay, so, I know it Thursday.   I’ve been really busy lately trying to find a new survival job.  At the end of this week, I will be technically unemployed.  I had 4 interviews yesterday.  I had some the day before and some today.  Couple that with applying to places online, and the stress of being broke, and you can hopefully understand why this post was late.  I was even worried enough to accept a temp assignment next week.  I have to find a way to pull myself out of bed at 7:30am (I went to bed at 4am last night) and work a 40 hour week.  Yuck.  In addition, I condemned myself to working 8 days in a row.  Training tomorrow, my last 2 days at the restaurant this weekend, then 5 day work week.  For an unemployed person, I sure feel like I’ve got no time.

And that feeling right there can be the productivity killer.  Reality is, I do have time.  I might be stressed and tired, but I have time.

On the flip side, I keep thinking of new stories that I want to write. Continue reading →

Every Friday I post flash fiction.  They are whatever I’m inspired to write at the time.  I’ve decided to do a weekly serial novel.  Every Sunday, I’ll add a little more to the story, until such time as it’s done.

Last week, I started off a story.  It didn’t get much response.  I think I jumped the gun.  I shouldn’t just randomly start posting a novel on here.  I want to know what you all want to read!

Writing Wednesday – To Be, or Not To Be… Original

Last week’s WW: Be Not Afraid

That is the question.  The answer is simple:  Of course!

But is it really that easy?

Genres

What is a genre, if not using an existing idea to write something that fits within it?  I don’t think that anyone would argue that writing in an existing genre automatically makes a story unoriginal.  But where do we draw the line?  Want to write scifi, ok.  Want to write about scifi nanites, ok.  Want to write about scifi nanites in a post-apocalypic world, probably still ok.  How about nanites in a post-apocalypic, technologically advaced scifi world?  I sure hope that’s alright, cause I’m doing that now.  How specific must an idea get before it becomes a take-off of something else?   Continue reading →

As I settled down to sleep last night, or really, early this morning by the clock, I laid in the dark, my brain churning gooey story slurry, trying to make something pliable out of it.   Which yielded me seeds.  I planted them in my brain, and then, this morning, a tiny sapling had sprouted.  And a story tree needs sun to grow, so I had to let it out.  I started a mind map, and started to bounce ideas off of my guy.

My idea tree is still growing, but I can already see the fruit.  What kind of juicy deliciousness did I get?  A serial scifi one.  Just the type I was trying for.  But I have to let it ripen.

So now, I have the beginnings of a universe.  I have a hint of some themes.  I even have the fetal development of a couple characters.  Soon my word babies will grow, and become fully functioning beings.

I don’t want to give too much away, and I’m sure a lot of things may change in the process.  But I’m so excited that I had to share something.  Get ready for: Skylands, Wind Chasers, the Void, and an AI who may or may not be trying to save or kill us all.
