Last Week’s WW: Good Science Leads to Good Fiction

While working on my current project, I’ve run into some tough writing times.

Usually, I can sit down and crank out two thousand words in an hour.  Then I  finish my second or third cup of coffee while using my free hand to pat myself on the back, and I’m done for the day.

But for some reason, working on my Slumber Series, I’ve been overwhelmed.  I would sit down, write two sentences, and think, ugh this is so hard.  I’m never going to get anything done. And promptly switch to playing Hearthstone or watching people on Buzzfeed try foods from other countries.   Continue reading →

advice, blank page, block, finished, finished project, getting through it, how to, how to write, motivation, serial, series, write, writer, writer's block

Yay!  I finished Book 2 of my current project.

I’m especially relieved because I had been facing bad block.  Well, I hesitant to call it writer’s block.  I knew a lot of what I wanted to write, and had a rough outline.  But I was intimidated by the project.  It was so far out of my comfort zone.  It was mostly a story of internal conflict.  The guy goes crazy, so I was using an unreliable narrator.  Plus, this story has themes.  I know, all stories have themes, or they’re not really stories.  But I normally don’t come at a story with themes in mind.  I usually write the story, find the themes in it, and fluff them up more later.

I had a lot of challenges with this book.  Like I said, way out of the comfort zone.

(my guy also points out that by turning, what theoretically could be 1 novel into 5 different stories, it’s extra difficult, because there has to be 5 different, complete stories, as well as an overall arch).

But I did it.  It’s done!  Since I was so scared of this project, I found that it helped to get outside accountability.  I started posting my word meter to my facebook page.  It really inspired me.  It tore down my walls and let the words run free once more.  I wrote about 10,000 words in 3 days.

So don’t be afraid of any project.  If you’re not pushing yourself, you’re not growing and improving.  Do whatever you have to do to motivate yourself.   It’s worth it!!

Writing Wednesday – ESD: Extra-Sensory Description

Last Week’s WW: Hook, Line, and Sinker

Most people will tell you, that when you write description, you should try to incorporate as many senses as possible.  Sight, sound, touch, smell, and, if you can, taste.  This is the basis of immersion writing.  A style in which you want your readers to feel like they are really in the screen.   They are transported to that world, that moment, and experience a full three-dimensional range of all that your character does.

I am a big fan of this style of writing.  But I want to take it to the next level.   Continue reading →

Last Week’s WW – Description

There’s something disturbingly gratifying about killing off a character.  Whenever I do it, I get this sense of sad and satisfaction.  Strange as it may sound, I think that it’s evidence that I did a  good job crafting the character.   Continue reading →

apartment, dog, inspiration, life, motivation, move, moving, no cable, read, unpacking, update, writer, writing

Check out the new format!  That was a lot of work.  Seriously.  And now all the Flash Fiction can be found in a convenient place.  Miss a week or start following later and didn’t want to shift back through all the blogginess?  Now you can see them all!  I’ll still post them on here every Friday, but I’ll put them there, too.

Usually I talk about what’s going on in my life when I bus blog.  But, I haven’t been doing that lately, because I haven’t been bussing it.  My boyfriend and I share a car.  Normally I let him use it.  Mostly because he’s been paying for it.  But now that my new job is going decent, and our schedules line up, I’ve been dropping him off at work and driving myself to work.  He works longer shifts then I do, so the timing normally works out great.

My days have been going like this:  Get up morning-ish, take the dog out, maybe play with him a little, get the guy up, cook us some food or go grab something, drop him off at work, chill for an hour or two at a coffee shop and write, and drink way too many refills, then go to work, pick him up, come home.   Continue reading →
