Last Week’s WW: For Love or Money

Some people will tell you that writing the first draft of a book is the hardest part of the process.  Others will tell you that it’s doing revisions, or waiting for your book to finally come out.  Everyone has an opinion on which part is the hardest part, but in my experience, everyone is wrong.  Continue reading →

Last Week’s WW:  Narrative and Style

Sorry that this is a day late.  I meant to post yesterday, but I sat down to finish my edits and formatting on Otherworlders, and wound up at my computer until 5am.  By that point, I was a bit tired and cranky and just ready to be done for the day.

If you have a project, I highly recommend getting an editor.

I can’t imagine how impossible it would have been to do all that work myself.  Honestly, I probably wouldn’t have been able to.  There’s just still many technical things that I’m not skilled enough to know or I am too close to my project to see.

I sent mine off and when it came back it was beautiful.  But that doesn’t mean that I was done with it.    Continue reading →

Last Week’s WW: Distractions

Have you ever written something, and thought, This is going so well.  This is the best thing ever written!  I could publish my first draft!  and then, somehow, at some point, the shiny wears off and you start to see all the little, and big flaws.

Bus Blogging – Daydreams

Usually when I ride the bus, I listen to audio books. But today, I can’t stop thinking about my book. That, and the fact that the bus smells vaguely of crayons. Which is better than other things it could smell of, I suppose.

I’m almost 1/4 of the way through this round of revisions. I think ( probably naively so) that the really hard part is over. I created a lot of new content, and mixed in some of the old. But I’m now getting to the point where it’s still got a bit if new stuff, some breaking it apart and stitching it back together in different places, but mostly it’ll be polishing. With any luck, this is it. Unless someone is paying me to change things in the book (like a publisher) then hopefully this is the last draft that I’ll need to do.   Continue reading →

I’ve started on the third draft of Otherworlders. I was planning to just do a polish, but decided that it needs a little restructuring. Gotta add a few chapters here and there, tweak a couple character traits… Hope it won’t be awful. I hate revisions. It’s more fun to write new material, revisions are slow, and I feel like the worst writer in the world while I’m making them. Just when I thought I was done, I got pulled back in. If nothing else, I know every draft I do makes it better. Hopefully after this one, it’ll be good to go.
