Last Week’s FFF: Azure Mist

title

Kade pulled his goggles over his head, snapping them snuggly over his eyes.

“Saddle up, boys. This’ll be our last test run,” said Halden.

Kade smiled broadly and plunged ear plugs into his hears. Even with the neon orange sound stoppers, he could hear the hoots of Halden and the Twins. They readied themselves, and settled into quiet concentration.

Kade closed his eyes as he focused on the time. For Kade and his crew, time had a feel to it. It was something they could touch. Something they could manipulate.  Continue reading →

Last Week’s FFF: Hero Needed

title

The day had started like any other day. He awoke to the sounds of his dorm mates music around quarter to ten and made it to class by ten thirty. After that, he headed to the cafeteria for his normal slice of double decker pepperoni pizza and headed across the street from campus to eat in the park.  He often spent the time between classes there, drawing, walking, thinking, and today was no different. Sitting on his normal bench, he observed the world around, drawing the things that interested him.

Then she caught his eye. Continue reading →

Last Week’s SS:  Run

Dealt

The world was silent.  This time of day found most people in their homes.  Soon, they would be roaming the streets and commuting.  Soon, the guards would come and lower the bridge.   Continue reading →

Last Week’s FFF: Ashes

title

Ricky stared at the cards in his hands. He held a pair of twos, and nothing on the table could help him.

“Fold or raise?” Abbot asked, sitting across from him.

Ricky swirled his gin, thinking.

“You sir,” he paused to take a sip. “Are as impatient as a Moscow Mule.”

“As stubborn as one, as well. Now, make your move or I’ll make it for you.”

Ricky sighed and threw his cards face down on the table. The man across grinned and gathered the pot.

“Yeah, yeah,” Ricky said.

He brought his cups back up to his lips, but stopped when he heard a woman’s scream echo down the nearby stairwell.  Continue reading →

Last Week’s SS: The First Fight

Dealt

Outside of the house was nearly pitch black, with only the waning moon overhead lighting the night.  The new moon would beginning tomorrow.  It’d be a new beginning for me, as well.  If I lived that long.  Tears streamed down my face as I ran from the house.  Just outside I saw dead soldiers.   Continue reading →

Last Week’s FFF: Seven-Year Firestorm

storyt title

I want to say I felt cold.  Truth is, I didn’t feel anything.  That should have been a comfort.  But it was so easy to forget.

My mind and eyes seemed to be the only things working.  However, they weren’t working well.  My eyes were stuck, fixed looking up at the ceiling and anything that happened to pass into field of vision.  My mind felt like it was running on reserve power.  Not quiet enough to fuel the system, but enough to keep the smallest spark ignited.

I wanted to move.  My mind instructed my arms and legs to get me out of here.  At least sit me up.  But they wouldn’t listen.   Continue reading →

Last Week’s SS – Intruders

Dealt

Indecision overwhelmed my senses, and I could do nothing more then sneak another look into the room.  The man across from Victoria had his back to her and the guards.  He was inspecting our mantel.   Without turning, he spoke.  His voice was deep, but he spoke with a smooth, even tone.

“Did you find the girl?” he asked.

“She wasn’t in her room,” one of his men replied.

“Where is she?” he asked.

“I don’t know, sir.”

“I wasn’t talking to you.  I was talking to the Hierophant, if that is your real card.  Where is the child?”

“I don’t know about any child,” she said.   Continue reading →

Writing Wednesday – Story vs Story Telling

Last Week’s WW: ESD: Extra-Sensory Descrption

Here is one of my deepest fears concerning writing:

The premise of the story is great.
The writing is top of it’s game, or at least, the best I can do.
The character’s are written consistently.
And yet… the book is awful.

It’s an idea that I’ve been thinking about for some time.  And, while all writer’s seem to think that their work is simultaneously the best and worst thing ever written, I have to imagine, it’s possible.

This is where we find another element of writing.  Delivery.

Last SS – Rebellion

Dealt

The bed groaned in protest as my lion twitched in his sleep.  I had abandoned the notion that robots couldn’t dream many years ago.  What he dreamed of, I didn’t know.  Perhaps he chased robot bunnies.  I’ve heard that dogs dream of real ones.  Though, I’ve never seen a dog outside of books, let alone seen one sleep.

My lion’s steam powered body was warm against my skin.  Not enough to burn, his golden casing didn’t conduct the heat efficiently.  Still, on chilly nights, like this one, I would call him onto the bed.

Suddenly he jumped up, stared at the door, and issued a low, mechanical growl.  His eyes glowed red. Continue reading →

The first draft of book 2 of my serial fiction project is complete.  Yay!  It clocks in at 20, 434 words.  Just over my goal.  I’m sure it will grow even bigger with the second draft.  So, that’s 2 books down, 2 to go.  Hooray!  Skyland has been edited, and is ready for round two.  I’m sending Windchasers to my Alpha reader for feedback.  But I’m going to wait to do a global draft 2 until all four parts are done.  For now, it’s time to start Submerbia.  (I need to think up names for the actual book and series.  Any suggestions are appreciated.)

For today, however, in excitement for finally being finished with it, I’m posting an exert from the first chapter.  Let me know what you think!  Sorry there is no separate FFF, I had a quick day, consisting of waking up way too late, taking a shower, riding the bus to work, working, and coming home.  And now it’s almost 1am.  But I hope you enjoy the exert and any feedback is appreciated. Keep in mind, it’s still first draft status.  🙂

WINDCHASERS

The wind drove me forward, as it did all things.  My people, the livestock, and the dust.  Torrential force slapped at my backside as I made my way along.  Hood over head, the thick sheep-hide cloak shielded my weather-thickened skin from the brunt of it.  Still, as it pressed upon me, it was a constant reminder of the urgency of our migration.  Continue reading →
