Last Week’s SS: Run
The world was silent. This time of day found most people in their homes. Soon, they would be roaming the streets and commuting. Soon, the guards would come and lower the bridge. Continue reading

Last Week’s SS: The First Fight
Outside of the house was nearly pitch black, with only the waning moon overhead lighting the night. The new moon would beginning tomorrow. It’d be a new beginning for me, as well. If I lived that long. Tears streamed down my face as I ran from the house. Just outside I saw dead soldiers. Continue reading

Last Week’s SS – Intruders
Indecision overwhelmed my senses, and I could do nothing more then sneak another look into the room. The man across from Victoria had his back to her and the guards. He was inspecting our mantel. Without turning, he spoke. His voice was deep, but he spoke with a smooth, even tone.
“Did you find the girl?” he asked.
“She wasn’t in her room,” one of his men replied.
“Where is she?” he asked.
“I don’t know, sir.”
“I wasn’t talking to you. I was talking to the Hierophant, if that is your real card. Where is the child?”
“I don’t know about any child,” she said. Continue reading

Last SS – Rebellion
The bed groaned in protest as my lion twitched in his sleep. I had abandoned the notion that robots couldn’t dream many years ago. What he dreamed of, I didn’t know. Perhaps he chased robot bunnies. I’ve heard that dogs dream of real ones. Though, I’ve never seen a dog outside of books, let alone seen one sleep.
My lion’s steam powered body was warm against my skin. Not enough to burn, his golden casing didn’t conduct the heat efficiently. Still, on chilly nights, like this one, I would call him onto the bed.
Suddenly he jumped up, stared at the door, and issued a low, mechanical growl. His eyes glowed red. Continue reading

With my shiny new friend at my side, the days got better. We became inseparable. He slept in my bed, woke with me, accompanied to do my chores, and sat with me during lessons. He fought at my side, or mock against me, for combat training.
The years flew by like hands on a clock. Each tick a day. My loneliness had been curved, so I set my mind to other ideas. I wondered what the future would hold for me.
“Some day you’ll have to face the Emperor,” Victoria would tell me. Continue reading

After my attempt to jump off the cliff, we went inside, she put me to bed, and not a word further was exchanged between us. I fell asleep fast as she went to make arrangements. Morning came. I parted my eyes and saw the fuzzy glow of the golden sun coming through my window. Victoria had let me sleep in. It was the first time that I could remember getting up after the sun. A small smile came to my face. Perhaps things really would be different.
My smile turned to a grimace of fear as I opened my eyes further. I was wrong about the golden haze. It wasn’t the sun. It was a lion, and he was staring me directly in the face. Continue reading

I remember little of my beginnings. I suppose no one ever really does. My first memories aren’t of a loving motherly smile. Victoria tried her best, but she was a teacher first and a protective guardian. Mothering didn’t come easy to her. In fact, most anything traditional challenged her. Being an inverted hierophant, anti-establishment was her nature. She was a terrific actress when it mattered. But living with her every day of my life, I felt something missing. Continue reading

Last Week’s SS: Dealt – The Search
Victoria told this story to me a thousand times. She said that it was important that I knew where I came from and the severity of the situation. But I think it was of equal importance to her that I never feel as though I was easily abandoned. My best guess is that she presented them a hefty bag of coin and they handed me over without a second thought. Nor do I think they told her of my destiny. Not until she demanded the card. But Victoria tells the story a bit different. Continue reading

inMy parent may have been on the run, but they still needed to work. With all of their money spent on the hospital trip, they were back to peddling. They set up shop at the opposite end of town, and wore disguises to reduce the risk that anyone who knew them would see. If anyone were to locate my parents, it would take a great deal of motivation and money. Victoria had both.

Last Week’s Dealt: Victoria
Read it from the beginning: Welcome to the world
After tense minutes of silence waiting for the High Priestess to arrive, she finally entered. She was being led by security, however, they dare not touch her. No one had ever heard of a priestess inflicting any sort of damage on any living creature. However, this did not diminish the fear that people felt in her presence.
“Priestess, did you deal this card?” the Emperor asked, maddened.
With a slight, soft bow of her head, she motioned her reply that she had. Continue reading
