I ran out into the rain, desperately trying to escape to the image of my father’s affair, and the hurt in my mother’s voice as she found them.

I’d rather be anywhere but here! I screamed inside my head.  I squeezed my eyes tight.

The sound of the rain stopped.  I opened my eyes and found that I was back in the pawn shop.  The lights were off, and the place appeared closed.

Kade pulled his goggles over his head, snapping them snuggly over his eyes.

“Saddle up, boys. This’ll be our last test run,” said Halden.

Kade smiled broadly and plunged ear plugs into his hears. Even with the neon orange sound stoppers, he could hear the hoots of Halden and the Twins. They readied themselves, and settled into quiet concentration.

Kade closed his eyes as he focused on the time. For Kade and his crew, time had a feel to it. It was something they could touch. Something they could manipulate.  Continue reading →

“You’d better have a good reason for dragging me out of bed at 3 AM,” Jack barked indifferently to the situation room full of his coworkers, bosses, and subordinates.

“Glad you could join us, Agent Reiss.” If Jack had a direct boss, it would have been this man. Standing in the lab, Brady’s breathing became rapid as he stared at the device before him. It wasn’t what he expected. Instead, it was hardly large enough to fit a man his size, and colored a listless silver. His muscular chest rose and fell, and his solid frame rattled. Wearing a white coat, the scientist placed a consoling hand on his back. Swallowing hard, he took pensive steps forward, and stepped into the machine.

“Is this going to hurt?” he asked.

“I’m not really sure. I would assume so,” Dr. Stone answered as he checked the readouts.  Continue reading →
