Bus Blogging – Sigh

Bus, bus blogging, dibe and dash, illegal, layoff, manager, server, unfair, waiteess, work

They’ve got these TV screens on the bus. This one happens to be playing a report about a bus stabbing. Awesome. Great to have that in my mind while knowing I have to take the bus home at midnight tonight.

Sorry that there wasn’t a flash fiction this Friday. Work was rough yesterday. There’s been a lot of changes where I work. Two managers got fired recently, leaving others only loosely in charge. Some with no experience. Don’t get me wrong, those old managers were out of their league. It’s likely better that they’re gone. But I don’t like to delight in others misfortune unless they’re fictional characters.

So, there’s understandably been chaos. Scheduling issues, leadership issues, changes here and there. Some for the better, others…

The new “manager” thought everyone knew that the restaurant is closing for 3-4 months for remodeling come Sept. Nope. No one knew. So, yeah, basically yesterday I discovered that in a couple months I’ve got to be on a job hunt again.

Also last night, a table walked out without paying and the “manager” made me pay for it out of my tips. $65. Now, I’ve looked it up and that’s not legal. Not to mention I was super mad. I didn’t work to the point of exhaustion yesterday to make nearly nothing.

My sister is getting married in Florida today, and I couldn’t afford to go.

So, between the stress and exhaustion, I didn’t have the ability to write it this week.

I’m revising my Kindle Worlds short story, and Orherworlders is being beta read. Hopefully I can get those two out soon and help supplement my income.

It’s a shame unemployment doesn’t take tips into account or I’d enjoy my impending layoff as serious writing time.

So, I suppose it’s the end of the month.  Maybe I should be doing updates for May?  But I don’t really know what’s in store for next month.  I suppose, in a lot of ways, I live my life day to day.  A lot of the time I think it’d be better if I could plan for the future a bit more.  But, I guess there’s something to be said for living in the moment.  Right?

Bus Blogging – Daydreams

Usually when I ride the bus, I listen to audio books. But today, I can’t stop thinking about my book. That, and the fact that the bus smells vaguely of crayons. Which is better than other things it could smell of, I suppose.

I’m almost 1/4 of the way through this round of revisions. I think ( probably naively so) that the really hard part is over. I created a lot of new content, and mixed in some of the old. But I’m now getting to the point where it’s still got a bit if new stuff, some breaking it apart and stitching it back together in different places, but mostly it’ll be polishing. With any luck, this is it. Unless someone is paying me to change things in the book (like a publisher) then hopefully this is the last draft that I’ll need to do.   Continue reading →

Bus, job, Los Angeles, Pasadena, restaurant, work

Headed to my first real day of work. This far, it’s been all training. The restaurant opens tonight. So much that I will have to learn by doing. Scary and exciting.

My new position requires me to wear a little black dress. I’m meant to do my hair and make-up as if I’m going out. Classy tho, not over the top. I’m an odd site on the bus.

A strange thing just happened. The bus stopped for a minute and the bus drivers switched. The one that had been driving the bus got off, and a new driver had met up with him to take over. I haven’t seen that before.

This will be a short post. Too much other stuff to focus on. Have to learn table numbers and try not to panic.

Taking different buses this evening. I cut back my hours at work from full time to part time so that I’d have my afternoons free to apply at restaurants. This means that I have to wake up and go into work on an extra early shift. But it’ll be worth it. I hope.

So after an early day, I got off of work at 12:30. Which is great. Makes the day longer. Almost makes it feel like I didn’t even go. My guy took the bus and met me in Santa Monica for lunch. Then, from 2-4 walked around and applied at places (because that’s the way that you have to apply to most restaurants for some reason).   Continue reading →

Happy Hour – Bus Blogging

My bus was late today, making me miss my transfer. Luckily, there was one not long after. Thank goodness for smart phones or I’d never find my way.

Happy hour. I guess this is a natural part of working in an office. Everyone gets wound up, frustrated, depressed from sitting in a box all day. Occasionally, you have to let it all out. For some reason, despite spending forty hours a week in close proximity to the same people, they want to spend a few hours more.   Continue reading →

Dressed for the Day – Bus Blogging

It seems like sitting at the front of the bus is an invitation for people to sit by you. It makes sense, people don’t want to walk very far. Last week I had a man, who I don’t believe spoke English, dresses as a cowboy of sorts, asked me to move over so he could sit next to me, despite the bus being nearly empty. Of course, I did.   Continue reading →

This episode of bus blogging is brought to you, in part, by me needing to make up a few hours at work. If you don’t know most of that line, you’ve never watched PBS. I have no idea why it strange to mind just now. Must be my synapsis firing randomly from fatigue.

I’m trying a new route this morning. It’s like the one I take home from work, only backwards. I have to switch buses in the middle, but I don’t have to walk 2 miles total everyday anymore. I’m all for exercise, I need to do more of it, but not at 7 in the morning. I finally summoned the courage to ask a bus driver for a transfer. It was actually easy.   Continue reading →

Running Late – Bus Blogging

I didn’t bus blog this morning because I didn’t take the bus. Either my alarm didn’t go off this morning, or I slept through it. I’m not discounting the possibility that I woke up and turned it off, probably on accident instead of hitting snooze, but I have no memory of this.

So, waking up late, and still exhausted from rock climbing after work yesterday, I sprang to, instantly realizing that I was late. I’ve had some trouble getting to work on time this week. Tuesday I took the wrong bus, yesterday, my boyfriend took the wrong bus (see, it can happen to anyone!) so I had to go get him on my lunch, then we ate, making my 1/2 lunch an hour, and today, late again. My guy had to get up early and take me because he needed the car today.   Continue reading →

Casual Friday – Bus Blogging

Made it to the bus this morning with no time to spare. Literally, it pulled up as I walked up. Cutting it close.

Everyone loves Friday’s. But in some ways I think Friday’s are the worst. They are the culmination of a long week. The fifth day in a row if waking up too early and devoting so much of my precious time, both slightly against my will.   Continue reading →
