Last Week’s WW: A Little Mystery

Most people believe in something.  It doesn’t really matter what that something is.  It can be abstract, like the idea that good will always triumph over evil, or that humanity will inevitably destroy itself.   The idea can be more specific, like your opinions on the obesity epidemic or immigration.

When you identify something that you believe in, then you can use that.  You’ve got a theme. Continue reading →

Last Week’s MM:  My Bday

There’s this amazing culture in indie publishing.  I’ve seen so many examples of indie authors that are willing, and wanting, to help each other out.  I’ve mentioned Hugh Howey quiet a few times on here.  One of the author’s that he helped out is paying it forward.   Continue reading →

The Link to My Story

Remember that competition that I told you about?  Well, I got my short story done and I’ve entered it.  PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE check out my story.  Look at it, even read it and rate it if you want.  I think ‘read’ views help, so, if you don’t have the time, just pressing ‘read’ will count for me 🙂

It’s based on a story by Hugh Howey called Half Way Home.  This should work as a stand alone story, I hope.  It’s only about 5000 words long.

Between revisions/edits, adding the soundtrack (oh yeah, warning, there’s sound), and making the cover, I’ve spent 7 hours or so straight on this today.  The day really got away from me.  But hey, it’s done and up and hopefully it’ll win.

I’d also appreciate it if you could share the link, or tell other people about it, whatever you can do to help.

Thank you all so much!  I look forward to seeing what happens.  I feel good about this one.

Last Week’s FFF: Hero Needed

title

The day had started like any other day. He awoke to the sounds of his dorm mates music around quarter to ten and made it to class by ten thirty. After that, he headed to the cafeteria for his normal slice of double decker pepperoni pizza and headed across the street from campus to eat in the park.  He often spent the time between classes there, drawing, walking, thinking, and today was no different. Sitting on his normal bench, he observed the world around, drawing the things that interested him.

Then she caught his eye. Continue reading →

Last Week’s WW: Telling it Straight, or Maybe Not

What?  You mean to tell me that the butler did it?  But, how?  I mean, the communist was standing right there, holding the laser gun, and he had every reason to do it, after all, the dead guy stole his dog!

Sometimes a story can use a little mystery, whether that’s your genre or not.  Twists and turns can make a story exciting.  They can refocus a character’s and a reader’s attention.  They can help make your story unique.  Continue reading →

Last Week’s MM: Booktrack and Halfway Home

Okay, so this post might be a bit narcissistic.

But, yesterday was my birthday.  I turned the big 3-0.  Never again will I be in my twenties.  More and more lately, I’ve been thinking about the future.  Which is frustrating, because I see this amazing life that I want, and just have no idea how to get it.  I’m trying the best that I can, but progress is slow, and I’m impatient.  There are a few things I know for certain that I want, and others I’ve just got no idea.  Also, it’s difficult for me to express my feelings due to the anxiety.  But, now I’m just complaining and may end up depressing myself, so I’ll move on.  Continue reading →

Last Week’s FFF:  Grue

title

I held the morning’s paper in my hands and read the headline. Plastered in bold type, it announced that twenty had died yesterday in a subway mishap. Well, can’t save them all. Still, I figured that with this sort of thing happening, there might be a drop in the need for my services. I quickly discovered that I was wrong.

Last Week’s WW: Fresh Eyes

Recently, I was having a conversation in which it was brought up that there is a standard, or at least, commonly seen way of writing.  Often, stories take place in chronological order, without big time gaps, from one persons point of view.  It was suggested that this was the easier way to do things, and that when you try to play around with that formula, it doesn’t always turn out pretty.

This seemed backwards to me.  The majority of my writing (with the exception of Flash Fiction, because it’s difficult to fit different points of view and things into 1000 words), are told this, not quite wrong, way.

Most of my stories involve multiple protagonist.  I am a big fan of an ensemble cast.   In my most recent story, my book spanned 18 years  and Otherworlders spans a few years, too.

I think that these things can be used to great effect, as long as their done well.   Continue reading →

I’ve looked at booktrack before, but never really got around to using it.  It seems like a nice way to enhance your reading.

Beyond that, I found that they are having a competition.   I was participating in a live google hangout thing, it was for The SciFi Geeks Club, and Hugh Howey was the guest.  Actually got to ask him questions, which was awesome.  The writer in me was excited to be networking.  The social anxiety side was terrified.  But, I did manage to participate.  Anyway, he told me about this contest.  I’m currently writing a story, Witness, for Kindle Worlds, based on his Silo Saga.  This contest is looking for short stories based on a different book of his, Halfway Home.

There are two different contests.   Continue reading →

Last Week’s FFF: Fireworks

title

Cassy ran after Tom quick as her awkward legs could carry her. At eleven, she had sprouted taller him, even though Tom was already twelve. She had developed more advanced in other areas, as well. Her interest in the same games he liked began to wane. No more did she really desire to play guns or dinosaurs.   Continue reading →
